• It occurs when, after fertilization, the embryo develops from the zygote by successive cell divisions.
• Somatic cells make up most of the tissues and organs in your body, including the skin, muscles, lungs, intestines, and hair cells.
• In humans, the haploid cells produced by meiosis are sperm and eggs.
• When a sperm and an egg unite at fertilization, their two haploid sets of chromosomes combine to form a complete diploid set - a new genome.
